Are you an owner, team leader, or manager of a martial arts school? If so, then it's important that you constantly motivate your staff members towards peak performance. One factor in doing so is to constantly remind them of how much you appreciate all of their hard work, devotion, loyalty, effort, and accomplishments.

Here's ten simple tips to get you started.

1. Keep Your Word Dr. Stephen Covey says, "Trust is the highest form of human motivation." And one of the best ways to gain an employee's trust is to always be up front and honest with them. Never make false promises. Employees will resent you for it.

2. Praise in Public One of the most powerful ways to show a staff member that you appreciate them is to praise their efforts in front of others. This puts them in the spotlight and encourages them to keep up the good work.

3. Remember Birthdays Okay, we've all suffered through too many off-key renditions of Happy Birthday to You. But you gotta admit, once you get past the singing, birthday parties can make you feel pretty darn appreciated. That's why it's recommended that you not forget to celebrate your staff members' birthdays.

4. Actively Listen You can build tremendous rapport with a staff member simply by taking the time to patiently listen to them when they have something to say. Avoid pretend listening. Instead, listen with the intent to understand. They'll feel truly appreciated.

5. Recognize Accomplishments It's tremendously gratifying to staff members when their leader recognizes their accomplishments. A congratulatory email, pat on the back, round of applause, award, or some kind words in front of their colleagues will go a long way towards making them feel appreciated. Not recognizing accomplishments can lead to frustration and disappointment.

6. Make Yourself Available If you want to make an employee feel completely unappreciated, simply let them know that you are too busy when they try to communicate with you. The message this sends out is "You're unimportant." On the other hand, if you want your staff members to feel like executives, make time for them whenever they need your leadership. Remember, they're on YOUR team.

7. Schedule Lunch Taking a staff member out to lunch every now and again is one of the easiest ways to show them how much you appreciate them. Not only will it make them feel great, but it'll make you feel great as well…that is until they say, "Ill have the lobster!"

8. Create Incentives Someone once said, "Nothing says thank you louder than a check." I'll let you be the judge of that one, but it's true that monetary rewards, Christmas bonuses, performance based incentives, or occasional gifts always reminds staff members that you appreciate them. Often, this encourages them to double their efforts for you.

9. Give Compliments What can make a staff member feel appreciated more than a genuine compliment from their respected leader? Okay, maybe two genuine compliments. You get the idea. Just remember, when it comes to making others feel appreciated giving regular and genuine compliments reigns supreme.

10. Host Gatherings Another way to make staff members feel special is to bring them into your inner-circle. An easy way to do this is to have a party once in the while and invite your staff. E.g. Super Bowl Sunday, New Year's Eve, Fourth of July, Christmas, etc. This is an easy way to build camaraderie, team spirit and show appreciation.

Of all your school's resources, its human resources are the most valuable. So never take your employees for granted. Instead, always remind them of how much you appreciate them. You're employees will work harder, feel better about their jobs, and smile whenever you enter the room.
